Rwanda Centenary Celebration

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We give thanks to God with the people of Rwanda as they mark a momentous milestone: the centenary of gospel proclamation in the Anglican Church of Rwanda.

For one hundred years, the good news of Jesus Christ has been faithfully preached in Rwanda, taking deep root in its communities, transforming countless lives, and shaping the spiritual foundation of an entire nation.

An event to mark this centenary was held last week in Gahini, Rwanda, as we gathered with over 10,000 people on the same hill where the East African Revival began.

What a delight it was to gather for this time of heartfelt praise, with glorious choirs, faithful Bible exposition and joyful fellowship, convened by Bishop Manasseh Gahima and Mama Rose, who warmly welcomed us into their diocese.

The Most Revd Dr Laurent Mbanda, Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Rwanda and Chairman of the Gafcon Primates Council, spoke a powerful message about the fruit of revival, and the importance of integrity, character and accountability within the churches and leaders.

Under his leadership, Rwanda stands as a witness to the whole Anglican Communion of how a church rooted in the Scriptures can be a light in the darkness and a beacon of renewal.

The story of the Anglican Church of Rwanda is part of the larger story of God’s work across Africa and the Global South, where the Anglican faith is growing at a remarkable pace.

This growth is a sign of hope for the entire Communion—a reminder that the Lord is raising up a new generation of faithful witnesses who will carry forward the mission of the gospel.

For me personally, this celebration is close to my heart.

Last year, I was consecrated as a bishop in Rwanda, and I carry with me a deep gratitude for the faith, hospitality, and gospel courage of the Rwandan people.

To share in ministry alongside them is both an honour and a blessing.

As we reflect on this anniversary, we are reminded that such celebrations are not only thanksgiving to God for his faithfulness, but also recommitment to the mission of the church: the proclamation of the good news of Jesus Christ to every nation, tribe, and tongue.

Brothers and sisters, let us persevere in that same mission, rejoicing in God’s faithfulness and praying for the Bible to be at the heart of the Anglican Communion, for his glory.

Yours in Christ,

The Rt Revd Paul Donison
Gafcon General Secretary
